21st Century Community Learning Centers

The 21st Century Community Learning Program (CCLC) is a U.S. Department of Education program, adminstered through the states, providing grants to schools, community and faith-based organizations and youth development agencies, to provide high quality, expanded learning opportunites outside of regular school hours for children in a safe and sound educational environment.

In collaboration with the National Partnership for Quality Afterschool Learning, NCCE provided training to 138 afterschool practitioners from the states of Arizona, Nevada and Utah. The training was held October 4 – 5, at the Black Canyon Conference Center in Phoenix, Arizona. Plans are currently underway for a regional conference in Las Vegas to be held in late February 2006. More information will be posted to this website in mid November.

The annual Lights On! Afterschool Celebration takes place Thursday, October 20, 2005. Thousands of communities around the nation will come together to showcase their afterschool programs and to focus attention on the need for all children to have a safe place to go afterschool. Statistics report that nearly 15 million children in the United States are left home alone between the hours
3-6 p.m. For the sixth year in a row, the Afterschool Alliance is leading the charge to build public will for afterschool, so that all children in this country will have access to quality and affordable programs.

A special kickoff for the Lights On! Celebration is happening in Birmingham, Alabama on Wednesday, October 12, 2005. Festivities will occur throughout the day and will culminate with a pre-season basketball game between the Atlanta Hawks and the Charlotte Bobcats. Last year’s game drew a crowd of 15, 000 and the Afterschool for All message was shouted from the rafters with special presentations made during a half-time, center-court ceremony.
