National Training Program

The National Center for Community Education (NCCE), located in Flint, Michigan, has been in operation since 1962 to promote community education by providing leadership training opportunities. These sessions provide participants from across the United States, Canada, and other parts of the world a chance to:
  • Formulate a conceptual framework for community education
  • Explore a variety of community education models
  • Share with outstanding community education resource people
  • Develop skills related to successful community education practices

The Future of Our Training Program

As we enter the new century, we see the NCCE growing stronger by expanding many of its leadership training components and launching Community Education into the future with the following new approaches.

The training workshops will be enriched and expanded by:

  • forming a national network of agencies and resources representing the diversity of community education training efforts,
  • building and experimenting with multi-faceted community education curricula and training formats, and
  • developing and offering sequential community education training formats from orientation workshops to providing training opportunities for experienced and proven community educators.
Initially, two new activities are being planned:

We will establish:

  • Exemplary Community School Site Visits.

The Center will plan and conduct an annual site visit to showcase exemplary community school models. This will be an opportunity for well-trained community school practitioners to study, experience and share "cutting edge" models and sites.

  • Second, we will provide Contracted Community School Training.

The Center will provide individualized community school training and technical assistance to a limited number of districts each year on a contractual basis. This will allow local communities to have access to state-of-the-art community education resources, while at the same time, the NCCE will have continual "hands-on" experience from which to base the theory and practice of its curriculum.
